1/1/2008 Okay, so it's a new year and I thought I better get this site updated! Last year I was able to resume competing in race walking events and actually did pretty good! In the process of training for a 1/2 marathon, I hurt my knee and had to have some pretty serious surgery on it. Now I'm in recovery and hoping to get back to competing in the spring. Looking forward to the Alpha 1 conference in St. Louis in June. If you haven't attended a national conference, you really should! There's so much information and lots of people with some amazing stories. Hope to meet you there!

1/31/2007 Hey! My name in Jenny Faull and I live in Grove City, Pennsylvania. I was diagnosed with Alpha 1 after my neurologist was checking my protein levels for something else. He noticed my Alpha-1 levels were low and sent me on to a pulmonologist who told me it wasn't really anything we had to worry about right now. YIKES! I mentioned it to my PCP and she said we were most certainly NOT just sitting on this. She sent me to a new pulmonologist who immediately tested my FEV1 levels, and within 3 months I began weekly infusions of Zemaira.

After being diagnosed, I knew my children were also at risk. We chose to have my husband tested first to see what the potential was for my children, and his results came back as MM. My children are all carriers, so we'll cross that bridge when it leads somewhere besides Sesame Street.

Alpha has changed my life to a certain degree. I used to race-walk, and now I can't exert myself quite as well. My times have gone down, but my focus has changed. I'm planning on going back to competing this year, but for a different reason: to educate the public about Alpha 1 (Most people, including myself prior to my diagnosis, have never even heard of A1AD), and to prove to myself and other Alphas that our diagnosis is a handicap but not an excuse. If you're ever in Western PA, look me up!! I'd love to trade stories, between yawns and gasps of course!
