1/1/2002 Hello fellow alphas, I write to you and thank everyone who has posted their stories on this page. As you can tell from above I am 34 years old and have a wonderful wife and a great son. I was told by my primary care doctor that I needed to be tested for this rather funky little disease Alpha 1. I was heading out of town for my annual two week vacation you see, so I was pretty fortunate not to have received the test results back until I returned for what I hold now as my best vacation ever. I remember sitting in his office upon returning and being greatly confused about this whole thing. All I remember thinking is that I am to young and in to good of condition to have this. I was a smoker for many years and after softball and indoor soccer I remember being winded but it always went away. I blamed it on the ciggs. As the years went by it got harder and harder, so I kept going to different doctors to find one that knew how to help me. It seemed like it would never happen. Well I met a great doctor at Barnes Jewish here in St. Louis who explained in great detail what was happening to me and what I needed to do to help myself. Quit smoking he said. Ha- Ha. I told myself that this was not happening to me and I am here to tell you that it was. I lost significant FEV quickly. So if anyone who is an Alpha is smoking you better Quit now!!!! The Prolastin seems to be holding back the depletion of my lungs and the rest is up to me with a sensible diet and exercise I can tell you I am going to beat this aggravation known as Alpha 1. Well I can go on and on. The bottom line is that we make it for ourselves, our families and friends and we make it together. I wish everyone a great and almost healthy life. If anyone needs to talk I am here.
