7/25/2005 I was diagnosed with alpha 1 in 2004. I was short of breath climbing stairs. I went to the doctor, thinking she would tell me to quit smoking and that would be that. She sent me directly to a heart doctor (I have a family history in heart disease). Then she sent me to a lung doctor in the same week. My lung doctor immediately suspected alpha one and tested me for it. Before I got results I looked it up on the Internet (I wrote out my funeral arrangements). But it turns out that I'm pretty healthy for having Alpha 1. Just taking all the precautions I can to stay well.

I have 3 sisters and 2 brothers. Two sisters have been tested. They are negative. The rest have chosen not to be tested, but show no symptoms. I keep telling them I'm adopted and this proves it.
