I am writing this letter to you on behalf of all the patients in our state that have Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1). Alpha-1 is a genetic disease that affects the lungs of young adults and the livers of infants and adults. It is more prevalent than cystic fibrosis, yet because it was first identified in 1963, it is not as well known.

Every year the Alpha-1 Association has an initiative to have the month of May declared Alpha-1 Awareness Month in all states. Our goal is to increase awareness and detection of this often misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed disease.

We will have a variety of events around the state during the month of May including support and educational meetings, Newsmaker articles in local papers, and Alpha-1 materials distributed to the medical and lay communities. Please help us by signing a proclamation declaring May Alpha-1 Awareness Month in our state.
