Definitions and Terms

  • FVC - forced vital capacity - the volume of air that can be maximally forcefully exhaled.

  • FEV1 - forced expiratory volume 1 - the volume of air that is forcefully exhaled in one second.

  • FEV1/FVC - ratio of FEV1 to FVC, expressed as a percentage

  • DLco - Diffusion Capacity. This study examines the ability of oxygen to travel into your lungs and uses a tiny amount of carbon monoxide (CO) to mimic the movement of oxygen from the air in the alveolus to the blood in the capillary.
